I’M FINE

In 2006, I paused my college education after my mother passed away in New Jersey. I packed my bags and moved back to Türkiye to be closer to family. That’s when I started photographing lonely men. At the time, I wasn’t aware that I was—in fact—the lonely man. At 19 years old, no one I knew had lost their mother. I had no one to talk to. Instead, I went on long walks with my camera and began projecting my feelings by organizing these lonely compositions. My subjects were often isolated from the rest of the world, capturing the very isolation I had been experiencing.

But because I believe in happy endings, as the book progresses, these men begin to find company. You see them with people and among friends. They loosen up, they smile, choosing to share themselves with others. Choosing to open up. Just like myself.
